Between baking up a storm for The Cookie Jar and unraveling the mystery of her cat Moishe's recent strange behavior, Hannah Swensen has a lot on her plate. But she'll always make time for her business partner, Lisa, who's in the midst of preparing for a big family reunion. Everyone is delighted when Lisa's long-lost uncle makes a surprise appearance. No one has heard from Gus in twenty-five years--and his arrival has everyone buzzing with excitement. Uncle Gus is immediately the hit of the reunion, telling tales of his great success and flashing money for all to see. He's almost as popular as Hannah's scrumptious carrot cake, which is also Gus's favorite dessert. But the next morning, as the whole family gathers for the group photo, one person is missing. Hannah offers to track down Uncle Gus, but her search leads to a shocking find. Over by the bar at the pavilion, she spots two slices of her infamous carrot cake, frosting-side down on the floor--and Gus's corpse with an ice pick jutting out of his chest! A little snooping reveals that not everyone was celebrating Gus's return. And when Hannah unearths more secrets from Gus's past, she discovers even more people with an axe to grind. Now Hannah's got to sift through a long list of suspects to find a killer--even if it could mean a recipe for her own demise... Includes 12 original dessert recipes for you to try! | | | |

Love This Series Jul 12, 2010 All the Hannah Swenson Mysteries are wonderful they are light hearted make you smile mysteries "cozy mysteries" (not scary, gory, or sad) but they are actually really good "keep you guessing" mysteries. I have read the first four and have now bought all Hannah books and anthologies for my Kindle, I just cannot put them down. Plus if you are someone who likes to bake you will love all the recipes that come with each story. I just book mark each recipe as I come to it on my Kindle and then they are super easy to find when I need them. I would recommend the entire series. Also the author, Joanne Fluke, is super nice. I e-mailed her once, when one of the cookie recipes I made did not turn out right, just to see what I might have done wrong and she actually e-mailed me back a couple hours later. Just a super nice person and a wonderful mystery writer.
Every bit as fun and entertaining as the previous nine Hannah Swensen mysteries Jun 09, 2010 The flowers are blooming, the bees are buzzing and the festivities are underway in Lake Eden, Minnesota. Summertime has arrived, and so has the Beeseman-Herman family reunion. And who better to provide some tasty treats to the families than Hannah Swensen, owner of The Cookie Jar bakery?
Since several of Hannah's close friends and family members are involved in this reunion, it's only natural that she is hard at work in her kitchen providing sustenance for the families gathered to enjoy the festivities. One of the specialties of the day is her famous carrot cake. The dessert loses some of its appeal, however, when Uncle Gus is found dead with two pieces of it by his side.
As Gus is the uncle of her business partner, Lisa, and the brother of close friend Marge Beeseman, Hannah feels compelled to solve the murder of the man who has just returned to the fold after a 30-year absence. Where had Gus been? Why did he return now? What did he want? These are questions that only time will answer.
Although Gus returned flashing expensive jewelry and wearing even more expensive clothes, something doesn't add up about the man who fled town in the middle of the night three decades ago. There is no lack of suspects in this murder, so it would be easier to figure out who didn't want him dead than to track down who did.
Hannah has her hands full as she works hard to come up with one tidbit after another, soothe the ruffled feathers of her temperamental cat, Moishe, and solve this mystery on a bare minimum of sleep. She also continues to be torn between two men of interest in her personal life: Norman the dentist and Mike the detective, both of whom want Hannah all to themselves.
Hannah doesn't have a lot of time to dither about which man she prefers, however, because it looks like Grandpa Jack may be blamed for Gus's murder due to his advancing Alzheimer's and a long-lasting grudge against the deceased. Hannah feels sure that Grandpa Jack isn't the one who did this dirty deed, so she must do everything in her power to keep an innocent man out of jail and a murderer from going free.
CARROT CAKE MURDER is every bit as fun and entertaining as the previous nine Hannah Swensen mysteries. It's almost like having your own family reunion when you get to catch up on what's going on in Hannah's life and visit with her mother, two sisters and close friends. There is just something so inviting about the town of Lake Eden and its residents that you'll want to pull up a chair and sit a spell!
The plethora of tasty recipes included in each installment doesn't hurt either! In this one you'll find such treats as Viking Cookies, Hannah's Special Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, Cocoa Fudge Cake, Rocky Road Bar Cookies and 17 others for a total of 21 concoctions to urge you into your kitchen. The mere mention of Norman's special egg salad had me stirring up a batch of my own before I could even finish the book. I would warn everyone against reading CARROT CAKE MURDER on an empty stomach!
Another great mystery Apr 01, 2010 I really like the Hannah Swenson cozy mysteries. I love the recipes(although I haven't tried any of them yet they all sound delicious). I love Hannah and her relationship with her sisters. I love how the little town Lake Eden is always celebrating something it seems.
This time it is a fmaily reunion for the families of Lisa and Herb. Guess who shows up? Long lost Gus, who left town years ago without a word to anyone and oweing several people money and getting into a fight with Lisa's dad. Gus is rich now and is flashing around his money, clothes and car.
Hannah is helping out by cooking and baking like she always does. She especially made a carrot cake for Gus at the request of his sister.
It's Family Picture time and no one can find Gus so Hannah is sent to find him and find him she does. He is in the pavilion dead in the middle of her carrot cake.
Who would kill Gus? There is a long suspect list. Seems Gus made alot of enemies.
Mike makes a deal to share his info with Hannah if she will share her's with him. But will He?
And why is Moishe the cat acting out?
As usual I had no idea who did it till the very end.

Carrot Cake Murder - Joanne Fluke Feb 12, 2010 Another great Hannah Swensen Mystery you get so involved in the story you do not want to put the book down. Hannah would make a good Police detective. Just like what the cover reads: "Filled with juicy scandal, delightfully eccentric characters and templing recipes." You have to try Hannah Special Carrot Cake with the best Cream Cheese Frosting recipe so good! Looking forward to the next Hannah Swensen Mystery.

PLEASE end the misery Jan 21, 2010 What's with the never-ending love triangle between Hannah, Norman, and Mike? It should have concluded by the third book. There's nothing entertaining about it. Why is Hannah confused? Norman has a doctorate, runs his own business, and is kind, considerate and faithful. Mike is self-centered, thoughtless and as dumb as a fence post. I keep reading the books in the series because the mysteries are OK, but the people in them, especially Andrea and Hannah's mother, are getting more and more annoying as the series continues. Ms. Fluke, why have you turned Hannah into someone so unattractive? It's more than a little creepy and sad that Hannah needs to encourage the affections of three men to feel good about herself. Andrea, the younger sister, comes off just as shallow and as bad. Strong, self-assured women are much more interesting, don't you think? The first few books in the series were a nice way to spend a rainy afternoon, but there has been no growth or maturity in the characters or the series. What a shame.
