2Great Readers, Awful Stories  Jul 30, 2010
I'm a fan of P.N. Elrod, Rachel Caine and Jim Butcher, so I decided to grab this collection to listen to on a long road trip. I'm kind of sorry I did, as several of the stories were so bad it made the trip feel even longer. I will say the actual people reading the books had great voices and were fun to listen to, but they needed better material.

Stories are)

1) Stalked by Kelly Armstrong. This is a bad piece of werewolf fiction where the author seems to know little to nothing about wolves or anything having to do with werewolves. There is also dreck about the female werewolf being the only one in existence and how people want to mate with her because of it. It's a really bad story that no doubt has Lon Chaney Jr. rolling in his grave.

2) Heorot is a Dresden File short story, but it's one of the worst things Jim Butcher has ever written. It's slow, insipid and it kind of clashes with the continuity of the main books. Also, Dresden comes off like a total idiot here as he spends several minutes telling us how people are foolish for believing certain things to be myths...and then he has a hard time believing in Beowulf or Grendel.

3) Roman Holiday. I own all of the Morganville Vampires books, but this short story by Rachel Caine was like a bad Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy [Blu-ray] rip-off. Sadly it also bears her trademark inability to write anything either romantic or sexual without it coming off ackward and forced.

4) Her Mother's Daughter. This was the best story in the collection, but Elrod's The Vampire Files, Volume One have always been excellent. Hell, she even made Ravenloft fiction awesome with I, STRAHD - The Memoirs of a Vampire - Ravenloft. This is a short but fun tale about Vampires, gangsters and weddings.

5) Newlydeads. I won't lie. This was so bad I stopped listening to it. The plot was stupid and the dialogue was some of the worst I've ever heard. I mean. I'm an ex-resident from the UK and this was like something written by a person who got all of their UK dialect knowledge from old 1950's BBC programming.

6) Where the Heart Lives. This was the second story in the compilation that I could actually consider good. It's a classic style turn of the (19th-20th) century ghost story and although I've never read anything from the Dirk & Steel series, I really enjoyed the characters and the plot.

7) Cat Got Your Tongue? Katie MacAlister's vampire fiction is pretty horrid, but this was a fun little ghost story with some nice twists and turns. This is the third and final story in the collection that I can be positive about. The ghosts were well written and quite hilarious. Easily the best thing of hers I've ever read.

8) Half of Being Married. Wow was this a stinker. It read like Werewolf: The Apocalypse or Anita Blake fan fiction. Everything about the story was cribbed from some other franchise and the writing flat out stunk. Only Newlydeads was worse. Lilith Saintcrow is an awful writer and this story was no exception

9) A Wulf in Groom's Clothing. Ronda Thompson died a few years ago from cancer. As it's rude and ill-mannered to speak ill of the dead I'll simply say this story was decent compared to others in the collection and that it was a paint by numbers "be honest with your spouse or else" piece.

In all, I would advise most readers to stay away from this collection and it's certainly not worth the MSRP. Worst of all is the eight stories are spread across ten discs in weird spots and so if you want to skip through an awful one (like Newlydeads), you have to be prepared to hit the skip button several dozen times to get to the track you want to be on.

4Great stories  Jul 26, 2010
Having read My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding I was delighted to review My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon and it didn't disappoint. Some of the stories are continued from My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding and some are completely new. What I especially liked is that most of the stories are short "in-betweens" featuring characters from the authors on-going series books. Another plus for this audio version is that the cds each had 99 tracks each with each story's starting point clearly marked on the box. I was able to quickly skip to the next story when I came across two that I had no interest in listening to. I recommend this one if you are a fan of any of these authors or just love paranormal romances.

3good stories but a bit repititious  Jul 26, 2010
I did not realize this was an audio book when I ordered it from Vine. I enjoyed the stories even though I sometimes found the multi voice format a bit distracting. One of the problems I had with this audio book particularly with "Stalked" is that listening to the voices brought out the repetitiousness of the dialog in the story. I think I would have enjoyed these stories a little more if I was reading them. The stories were nice but none were particularly memorable. Normally I have good recall of what I have read and heard but most of these just did not remain in my mind. Some stories were sequels to stories in "My big Fat Supernatural Wedding" not all provided enough detail to jog my memory and I expect that those who had not read that anthology could be rather lost.

5Makes it fun to go for a drive!  Jul 22, 2010
The stories were great - except maybe the last one which felt like someone cut off a substantial beginning and a substantial end, but the part included was fair. There are several of my favorite authors included, and the premise is fun.
Getting the collection on audio disks was unusual for me. I used to travel a lot by car and listen to audiobooks, but lately I just putter around town. I would hear about half a story on each excursion to the grocery, etc., so it took me a couple of weeks to finish the collection, but it did make my routine driving much more enjoyable.

3it kind of works for me  Jul 21, 2010
I thought I'd give "My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon" audio book a try. As a rule, short stories are not my favorite genre, and Audio Books tend to make me sleepy, so this seemed like a good time to go outside my normal box -- potentially a new way to embrace something I tended to avoid.

The opportunity to check out to new authors (to me) and /or series spin-offs from authors I like already, seemed like a good thing, but it was off-putting to hear men "go falsetto" to speak female parts. Contrary to popular male audio book readers' beliefs, we (women) don't speak in breathy whispers, or have annoyingly high voices -- and the women reading the male parts weren't much better in their attempt to delineate the speakers. I would have preferred to have the stories simply read without attempting a different voice and sex. I surely hope I didn't get too crazy when I read to the kids as I spoke for different characters! Hmmmm.

I did enjoy listening to the stories together with Gordy as we drove "off island" by ferry, so we could "share" the experience, rather than bury our heads in our individual books. We do like listening to stories on NPR as well as we drive. But the "audio anthology" just didn't cut it because of the readers' use of voices.

I imagine that those who are used to readers who verbally act out parts might not have the same issues I did. If you are one of those people, it's a fun collection, and I say go for it. But, I guess I'm more of the "old fashioned" kind of "reader" and will stick to reading my books, with real paper (not a fan of Kindle or reading online), and will likely avoid the short story genre as I had in the past.
