'Don't Talk to Stranger'? Dec 26, 2007
By Orchid I would have given this 0 star if possible, since there seems to be no improvement from this author. This is a very old story plot, very similar to her other 2 books (The Charlota Diamond, The Bejewelled Bride). Stupid, naïve female, told someone (the male) she met on the street almost everything about her life, anyone heard of the phrase: `Don't talk to stranger'? She didn't just talk, she told him almost everything about herself, let him hold her house keys, invited him into her house & showed him around, all these, without knowing his name, a stranger no less. How stupid does one get! If my memory serves me right, the other 2 stories she wrote had similar stupid females. Why female loved male? Where did that come from? Hormones? Sadness because of her father recent death? The only nice touch was the author tried to make the story interesting by giving it a story that span over 25 years. Sorry, too many flaws: one person monologue of explanation; (I have to keep going back a few paragraphs to understand the correct time line) inserting a murder attempt but with no criminal consequence (the stupid female wandered off at night by herself, in an city she'd not know, What! No common sense! How stupid can one get!); the 'beautiful but very bad' rilvary suddenly left the scene, adding insult to injury, with someone who had loved her forever, What!? Now, all of sudden, author decided to wrap everything up in 1+ pages. Must have enough words to fill up the 180 pages! I've read enough of this author's books to say that this author is now on my 'avoid list'.

Not exactly a hit or a miss.... Dec 29, 2007

"LoveTheRead"
I broke the rating down for this book in 3 ways 1 star because I actually liked the leading man Stephen, he was a true romantic and I thought that his feeling for Sophia were genuine, if a little under handed as to the way he went about getting to know her. I gave Sophia a half star, because although she was a likable character the author made her appear entirely too naïve for someone of her age and living in this era. She would have been better suited to say the period of 1700 or 1800s. She seemed to be too clueless to things going on around her, which would be obvious to the average person. The story line was ok; it could have had more depth. There wasn't much mystery although Ms.Wilkinson did try to shroud the secret of the Padova Pearls in a lot of cloche and dagger nonsense by introducing so many characters into the one storyline and in the last 15-20 pages she tried to pull it all together but it seemed rushed to say the least, but I give her 1 star for effort and another half star because I like the story setting of it being in Venice which I think is a romantic city in itself and gives the story that exotic, dreamy and sensual feel.
