This is one of the few texts that addresses work with families from a social worker's perspective. It assesses families by their level of need, from the most basic level (needs for food, clothing, and shelter) to more advanced levels (needs for intimacy and self-actualization), and provides students with models for assessment and interventions at each level. While other family practice texts present many different models of family work and many fields of practice, often focused on middle-class, private practice clients (leaving students feeling undecided about which model to use and when), this text provides an integrative model with guidelines for when and how to use different practice methods. Several new authors have contributed to the Fouth Edition. A new section on "Ethical Challenges" is included for each method of practice chapter to help students give special thought to this important area of practice. And each practice method chapter now includes Internet Resources to assist students and faculty in accessing new and relevant material. An Instructor's Manual is available to supplement this edition as an aid to instructors and to the learning experience of students. The Companion Website includes seven ethics case studies and experts' responses to them. Students are encouraged to formulate their own responses and compare them to those of the experts. A Professional Codes of Ethics is also featured. NEW VideoWorkshop on Marriage and Family Therapy includes a Student Learning Guide along with 85 minutes (20 clips) of course specific video footage is included on a CD-ROM. Overly complicated Jul 23, 2008

I was assigned this book for a college course. I found this book hard to understand and overly complicated. No one in my class liked this book. We also told the teacher that we didn't really learn anything from this book. We learned when he would go over the chapters and explain them to us. I understand this book wasn't ment for an exciting read but was it ment to be extremely hard to get through as it was? Thankfully for his next class; he will be finding an alternative book.
Invaluable resource for Social Work students Jun 16, 2010
By D. Hawkins This is a really good book and an easy read. We had to read it for a Social Work class and it has very clear and concise language. It's a must read if you are going to be working with children and families.

This book is comprehensive and fits in beautifully with the latest recommendations for best practice when working with families. It isn't a beginners book, it takes concentration to get through it,but is well worth it. cheers
