Quite dated and not very helpful May 13, 2000 I found this book to be very outdated -- apparently it was written in 1976 and it definitely reflects the times. Of the discussed problems, the closest thing to "a lack of desire to have sex" was termed "frigidity," which is offensive and very superficial. This book is not for people who have real problems feeling sexual. It is very simplistic and unrealistic in that it suggests masturbation as a beginning step to increasing sexual desire. As a therapist myself, I believe this suggestion trivializes the legitimate problem of sexual dysfunction due to lack of desire by assuming a person would want to do these things but just doesn't know how. This book may prove useful to couples who simply need a little kick to their sex life, but not for people with bona fide problems, in my opinion.

A wonderful "how to" guide Mar 29, 1999
By psyspeak@skylink.net Jack N. Singer, Ph.D. This wonderful "how to" guide is "a must" for everyone's bedroom.(actually it is not limited to their bedroom!) As a practicing psychologist and certified sex therapist, I was delighted to read Dr. Altman's practical approach, which really suits everyone! The book is easy to read, delightful and enlightening. I certainly recommed it for everyone experiencing difficulties maintaining the passion they wish and for those who want to keep their passion alive and strong. Jack N. Singer, Ph.D.

A helpful and fascinating book. Solve problems easily. Aug 22, 1998 I read this book because I saw Dr. Altman on a national talk show. She is as interesting in person and as informative as she is as a writer. I find her to be very intelligent and easy to listen to, and her instructions easy to follow. Her techniques are simple to follow, and her ideas really work. My wife and I are much happier since we've begun communicating, follow Dr. Altman's directions, and my wife has learned to be able to let go and relax so that she can climax more frequently and more easily. If you get a chance watch for Dr. Altman on TV, she seems to be on various shows and is worth looking for. Thanks for the book. Doug W.

This book is an excellent reference for sex therapy students May 16, 1999 I found this book to be so simple in its approach yet so intensely informative, that it is not only a book for couples or individuals who want to improve or enhance their sex life, it is also an excellent source of information for the serious psychology student, or sex therapy student. The techniques are excellent, productive, and effective. It is also interesting that this book, in its third printing, is still totally timely and refreshingingly new. Dr. Charles Miller, NYC

This program for impotence works - I no longer am. RT. Conn Jun 17, 1998 I was impotent for three years. As recommended in the book YOU CAN BE YOUR OWN SEX THERAPIST, I was sure that it was not physiological. I followed the program, as Dr. Altman, says - "step by step" It was easy to follow, but more important it works. I am active sexually, and enjoy life more.
